San Sebastian Churches

San Sebastian is a city filled with history and a number of its most characterful districts are enhanced by old churches. The Good Shepherd Cathedral (Buen Pastor) is particularly striking and is certainly the most important of the city's religious buildings, with its spire measuring in at some 75 metres / 246 feet in height.

This church was awarded the title of cathedral in 1953 and has seen a number of improvements over the years, including much restoration and renovation work. Other significant religious sights in San Sebastian include the Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro, the Iglesia de San Ignacio and the Convento de Santa Teresa, each of which is extremely photogenic.

Dating back to the late 19th century, San Sebastian's striking Buen Pastor Cathedral features Neo-Gothic style architecture and three spacious naves. With surrounding landscaped gardens and an elaborately decorated spacious interior, the Catedral del Buen Pastor stands opposite the Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro.

Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro

The striking Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro is an imposing church, built in the mid-16th century, with construction lasting around 30 years. Featuring twin towers, three naves, an elaborate interior and stained-glass windows, the Santa Maria Basilica features regular masses each day.

Santa Teresa Convent (Convento de Santa Teresa)

Part of an important group of religious buildings, the Santa Teresa Convent stands within the city's characterful Historic Quarter. The convent contains an impressive 17th-century church and a number of notable seasonal events.
